“Ten Sleep, Zero Chill” – Our Accidental Adventure into the Bighorn Mountains
Welcome back to The Simple Mile, where our travel schedule is made up of great ideas, random detours, and weather-based decision making. After catching our breath in Cody, Wyoming (and confirming that our RV was still in one piece), we pointed our rolling home down the highway toward a tiny-but-mighty town with the most intriguing name: Ten Sleep.
Now, before visiting, we assumed Ten Sleep meant:
A) A retirement brochure slogan
B) An adult-level nap count
C) A rough guess at how long RVers sleep after climbing mountains
Turns out, it’s actually a legit town nestled at the base of the Bighorn Mountains — and honestly, it deserves its own lineup of merch, bumper stickers, and T-shirts.
😴👀 First Impressions of Ten Sleep
Ten Sleep charmed us instantly. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, locals wave with their whole hand (not just the index finger off the steering wheel), and you half-expect to see a cowboy riding a horse into a drive-thru ordering a sweet tea.
The views?
Chef’s kiss.
Wide-open skies, crisp mountain air, and that “Am I in a movie or did someone mess with the saturation again?” kind of scenery.
⛰️ Hold Up… Why Aren’t the Bighorns Famous Yet?!
We’ve all heard the national park popularity contest winners:
- Yellowstone 🏆
- Glacier 😍
- The Tetons 📸
Meanwhile the Bighorn Mountains are over here like,
“Hi. We exist. We’re gorgeous. Why is no one taking our selfies?”
The moment we crossed into Bighorn National Forest, we went from casual road trip mode to travel-influencer-wannabe-photographer mode. The cliffs were towering, the forests were thick, and the winding mountain roads were so stunning that we pulled over multiple times — partly for photos, partly because our jaws needed a break from hanging open.
At one scenic pull-off, we even asked ourselves,
“Are we supposed to whisper? This place feels holy.”
🚙💨 Final Destination: Buffalo, WY
After a day of scenery that practically proposed marriage to us, we arrived in Buffalo, Wyoming, ready to relax, regroup, and maybe find carbs.
Buffalo did not disappoint:
✔ Cozy RV park
✔ Legit hometown cooking
✔ Locals so friendly you’d trust them with your dog, your keys, and your deep secrets
But the highlight?
Not the food.
Not the mountains.
Not even the perfect campsite.
It was… a wild turkey.
Yes — an uninvited, unbothered turkey cruised into our campsite like it had reservations and a VIP pass. He strutted around like he paid rent AND left Yelp reviews.
We named him Sir Clucks-A-Lot and he is now a spiritual member of The Simple Mile crew.
🔋 A Few Days of Chill Mode
Buffalo became our temporary home base, giving us time to recharge, explore, and remember where we put things like socks, chargers, and sanity. It was the perfect mix of small-town comfort and mountain magic.

Psalm 121:1–2 (NIV)
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
